Marketing Tip of the Month
Turn Website Visitors into Website
Promoters
October, 1999
Here’s
one idea to make the most of each visitor to your website: encourage them to
invite their friends or colleagues to also visit the site. Our "Send to a
Friend" website feature is very effective in building targeted website
traffic and capturing e-mail addresses you can use in future marketing.
The
"Send to a Friend" feature is a small area, about the size of an
advertising banner, that appears on the bottom or margin of some or all of your
website pages. The area is titled "Send This Page to a Friend" in the
case of consumer websites, or "Send This Page to a Colleague" on
business websites. The bar also includes three input fields labeled "Your
Name," "Your E-Mail," and "Friend’s E-Mail." When a
website visitor fills in the fields and clicks on the "Send" button,
the website immediately generates an e-mail message from the site visitor
to the friend. The message might look like this sample, generated by the
Party411.com website:
From: bn@dynamicsonline.com
To: friend@aol.com
Subject: Look at this great party planning web page!
You've got to visit this great web page called:
Party Planning from Party411
You can see that page at:

Let me know what you think!

The
above message, coming from someone known by the recipient, is much more
effective in getting the recipient to visit the site than the all-too-common
unsolicited e-mail messages (spam).
In
the above example, the website manager gets access to both the sender’s name
(Bruce) and e-mail address (bn@dynamicsonline.com), as well as the friend’s
e-mail address (friend@aol.com). All three fields are written to a data file
that can be used as part of a regular campaign of promotional and informative
e-mail messages.
